As Solomon said:

That which hath been is that which shall be; and that which hath been done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. [ASV] Ecclesiastes 1:9

Also consider:

‘Tis but thy name that is my enemy;
Thou art thyself, though not a Montague.
What’s Montague? it is nor hand, nor foot,
Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part
Belonging to a man. O, be some other name!
What’s in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;
So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call’d,
Retain that dear perfection which he owes
Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name,
And for that name which is no part of thee
Take all myself.
From Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, 1594:

I am amazed at the continued buzz in the U.S. surrounding “The Secret.” This “Law of Attraction” is nothing new, really. In other incarnations, this idea was put forward by Phineas P. Quimby and Mary Baker Eddy in the 1800’s. Wallace Wattles, William Walker Atkinson, Myrtle and Charles Fillmore in the 1900’s. Let’s not forget Napoleon Hill, Earnest Holmes, Norman Vincent Peale. I am leaving out a host of others.

In my own life-time, I have seen this “law” come in and out of the public attention many times. It there is anything new in the “Law” in its present incarnation, it is that it is being promoted by that marvelous modern marketing maven, Oprah Winfrey.

I will write more about “The Secret.” I will examine the teachings from the DVD from the perspective of my Christian worldview.
